Moving right along, trying to get caught up on my belated
blog posts. Our good friends, Jason and Carrie have a 1 year old son, Luke, and
we threw him a 1st birthday bash in April. I am so blessed to have
been a part of his first year of life. His parents are true inspirations to me,
and I am inspired by their sense of adventure and free spirits. Luckily, Jason
is from WA originally so I know I will stay in touch with them. I am so
grateful for their friendship this past year. See photos below of the Smurf piñata
that one of our fellow Guatemalan teachers brought to the fiesta.

Before spring break, we had a school wide soccer tournament.
I had not noticed how tranquil the students have learned to be in a classroom setting until
I see their competitive, aggressive sides on the soccer field. Yes, soccer is a
popular sport in the states, but saying it’s a big deal here is less than
accurate….IT IS LIFE! Our students were basically just scrimmaging with another
school, for a fun day of soccer…but parents that live up to an hour away, or
across the lake, made the trek to see their 5 year old kick the soccer ball
around. I couldn’t help but laugh at the
intense moms and dads, coaching their 6 year olds through the fence. Soccer is
not just a game, my friends, it is a sense of status and worth in this country.
